And then there are the FAT...

Men, Women and then there are the Fat. As far as I see it, this is THE most prevalent classification of mankind. The others, based on religion, caste, geography and all that blah, fade into oblivion.

I maybe digressing now, but lemme tell you a recent and relevant incident . Another one of those girl-inspection days. One set of parents walked in, walked over (us) and walked out. The 'Mom' was pretty sweet, all gushing that I was THE daughter-in-law they were looking for, while the 'Dad', well, he was a different story altogether. For the first 20 min of the conversation, the dude remained silent. So we were deceived into thinking he was the placeholder Decision Maker in the family whereas auntyji was the Real Deal. But then he opened his mouth. (Uhm, he did earlier too, but that was to stuff it with halwa, 25 pooris, potato AND unimaginable quantities of kalakhand that we served!) His first words were, "So, do you exercise?" If till then I was smiling and obliging, this question left me flabbergasted, because I knew where this was heading. I said,"Not really. I've been planning to, but haven't yet". Initially my mom got all defensive and for some godforsaken reason felt the need to justify," Illa, she used to go to the gym earlier but......no time now. And once she left it she put on more weight. But she loves working out. She....is very enthusiastic about it. She....diets a lot." etc etc.

Then he went on about how fitness is important and how his wifey aces 40 min on the treadmill every day (auntyji was beaming across the room) and how he is Mr.Calisthenics himself. All that with a belly the size of that cooking vessel in Jodha Akbar! Now, on a normal day, I would never be so mean as to say this about someone else, especially someone I hardly knew and that too well over 60. I wouldn't be judgemental about 'guests' coming into my house unless, UNLESS, he hadn't said all that he said!

Next he said, "I don't know what your weight is but I can tell you, you have to lose 10 kgs. And you should not gain it back after marriage". If I was flabbergasted before that, now I saw red. But I didn't say anything. Not that I care about what they think but I didn't want to make it seem like my parents haven't brought me up right. I could see my Dad and Dolz realllllll pissed on the side. Surprisingly, this time my mom (who is generally the one pleading/ screaming/ emotionally-blackmailing me into losing weight) laughed and said, "Actually, I've been after her to lose some weight for a very long time. But she says that Being plump is not a character flaw*. If that is the reason for someone to reject her, then she doesn't need a hyprocrite like that. She feels that what if after marriage if she puts on weight, the guy will leave her and go or what?" That moment, I could've just about jumped across the room, lifted my mom off the floor and given her a bear hug. I'm sure she would've thought I was nuts, but she deserved it!

{* That is a quote by a famous, wise, smart and intelligent person, aka Moi}

The opposition Mom decided to take charge again and subtly asked her husband to 'Ssshhh' and went on to pacify me saying,"Adellam thaana korayum. Just konjam exercise good dane. Don't worry, you are tall. Your weight doesn't show on you at all. You look really nice the way you are". [Translation: You will naturally reduce. Just a little exercise is good only] Sweet of her, yea, but not like I was worried and besides, the damage had already been done.

I may not be the dainty darling they are looking for but, what, if I'm fat I'm not marriage material but if I'm thin I'm the epitome of bahu-hood??? Maybe they should be looking out for Jane Fonda's daughter for their US payyan!

Forget just for marriage, fat bashing is everywhere. Fat people are the butt of all jokes. Harmless, at times, but never hurtless. All that extra adipose doesn't really cushion the heart from feeling bad! And you know...? Just because I'm taller and fatter than my older-by-4 years-but-shorter-and-thinner sis, I'm always considered to be the older one. It's almost like I'm gonna have to sport a disclaimer on my forehead henceforth reiterating my 'younger sibling' status.

It's such an annoyingly vain world out there that it really drives me nuts! Why is everything based on face value, or rather figure value? Even before saying hello, people have said,"Oh my god, you've put on soooo much of weight compared to the last time I saw you!" As I've said earlier, niceties are rare and unimportant.

But you know what? Call me plump, fat, gundu, chubby or whatever, atleast I'm happy. And I really would be a lot happier if everyone could see it too.

Its tragic Preets...I agree with you :| They have a saying in Tamil na..aaL paadi, aadai paadi... judgement in based on what you look like. Nothing else.
Humour, intelliengence, talent, all that vanishes into thin air, when benchmarking with one's physical attributes.
Thats with the common ppl though.

When you confront ppl who are a class apart they will appreciate you for your humour, simplicity and talent... our friends are perfect examples :)

Preeti darling I was reading this post with my jaw dropped. Seriously HOW DARE THEY SAY SUCH THINGS TO YA??? If I were u, I'd hv asked em to leave. Seriously I cant and wont tolerate such rude n arrogant imbeciles. How can u be so patient with such air-heads??

**So, do you exercise?"

And that was what he asked u first? OMG wut a twat! Pardon my language but rite now by blood is boiling Preeti. I may not hv known u for too long, but I REALLY LIKE WHO YOU ARE. And for me to read wut u went thru with that moron, I almost cried. What he said was emotional torture for ya. No girl deserves to be spoken to like that. What kinda man asks such qns the first time he meets a girl? Only a narrow-minded fool!

And for them to say that u should lose 10k etc etc. OMG who do they think they r? I so know this kind tho...alot of Sri Lankan families r the same. They look for a Aish look-alike (with a body abt to break into 2) for their sons and end up living miserable lives.

U really should hv told em off. I would hv. But I know u care abt ur parents and u dun wanna hurt em.

But please, never be forced to marry someone like this guy..ok hun? I dun want u to end up as some crazy family's dumb-logic-driven house-wife. Ur a humanbeing...a beautiful girl with a beautiful heart n soul. Never let ppl overloook that!

The rite guy will see u for who u r..not for how much u weigh on the scales.

And whoever says ur fat is blind...u r just like me..ur body type. Fleshy n HOT :). Look at ya! UR SO BEAUTIFUL! Cudnt that moron see that?? Mebbe he needs prescription glasses. He doesnt know what he's missing out on.

The most imp thing like u said is, that UR HAPPY. *HUGZ* very well-said there.

Read this post that I wrote abt my nearly-anorexic cuz n few stick-thin girls:

is this an appropriate post to make my first comment :-?? ...err.. anyway, aiyo pavam, that was a bad experience. i would say you handled it very well and your attitude is simply amazing. you should email that guy the link. i cannot believe how much ever forward our society gets, there is no dearth of people who just want to pull it back.

P.S:
reminds me of vivek comedy in dum dum dum - "tamil pasangalke konjam gunda irundha dhan pidikum"..lol...

oh come on preeto.. i shud say you have got an awesome attitude..., datz reflecting in each one of ur post.... although i shud give the credit for that to ur parents :)

coming back to ur post...well...u hit the nail when u said

>>Fat people are the butt of all jokes. Harmless, at times, but never hurtless

true..true..true... :) had been hurt so many times in my young age... but i shud accept....that strengthened my resolve to get fitter etc.,.. do hard work for that etc., etc., (although i must admit i am damn lazy :D) the thing is even i hate looking fat myself.... when i shed some kilos, i feel so happy.... i feel much better, enthu etc., when i gain some kilos it is the opposite..

but the point is, whether u are heavier or lighter in physique it doesnt matter... if you have a lighter heart (that is powerful) life will always be nice and fun.. if u have a slimmer physique and a heavier heart (dumped with garbage thoughts), life is gonna be miserable...thatz what i feel atleast :)

You are a babe. And, you have a tatoo. If thats not got enough for a guy I think he should pretty much start "ponnu pathufying" in the Miss Univ. paegants.

Anonymous said...

Oh, crap. This is one of the things which really risks bursting my blood vessels if it pisses me too much. Who the hell was the random uncleji to call you fat and make personal remarks, especially when he didn't have a six-pack himself (LOL@Jodha-Akbar vessel thingie :P)? You're way too patient but I mean it in a good way. It's a nice thing you let your mom slap them in the face with her awesome answer. I might have jumped up and threatened the guy with the kitchen knife or something while screaming my head off at him at the same time. :P
As far as "fatness" is concerned, you're not fat. And anyway, it's very normal to be tall and have some extra flab. And who doesn't have flab? Not everyone is a model here. And who the hell cares about flab if the person's smart and intelligent and witty and charming AND has a sexy tatoo? :O Whining about a few extra pounds while ignoring all those qualities just shows an empty top-floor of the head.
As for "fat" people, I've my own views. There are some who say since I've never been fat or even chubby, I can't understand them. True, I really can't. But at the same time, I can't understand their lack of restraint either. I'm not talking about chubby. I'm talking about the morbidly obese, who are so because they just plain eat too much. It's not even eating too much which bothers me. It's the fact that they moan about how they huff and puff and about some medical condition or the other. Bloody, why the hell eat so much then? There's something called self-control! Practise it! These people elicit no sympathies from me. If you genuinely have a problem, take control of the situation before it kills you. (This is again just for the obese whose health gets affected, not the regular chubby, which every second person is.)

Phew, rant over. :P

Drenched just spoke for all of us, I think. Though I second OK in saying that she speaks for herself when she avers that people are plain. I am frequently mistaken for Richard Gere.

Anonymous said...

@OK and Narendra: Oh, shut up. I know you both are jealous of my well-maintained figure and of my lovely, rosy complexion. When I said that part about the models, I just meant that not everyone's tall (okay, I'm vertically challenged). Hmph.
While Blogger hated OK's scary pic so much that it removed it, Narendra himself acknowledges the yummy things he has to give up on to maintain his "cool dude" type of image. Pity. I rule the roost with my beauty for which I've to do no efforts at all.

Ok, now I understand your comment on my "M" word entry.

The guy must have had Shani in his 7th house to have passed on someone with such good humor. BTW, how unclassy should one be to ask such questions to a girl with her parents (and his as well) present in the room (not that telling some stranger to lose weight in private is very couth either)!

Oh well, you'll do better, I am sure. I can't believe you don't have dudes standing in line after falling in love with your writing.

Take care,
B.
