The Devil Wears PRADA, The Angel Wears HERSELF...

Check out the pallette below giving this season Summer '07s MUST-WEAR shades. Dare to sport anything else and your stint in the everyday fashion scene is ka-put....So, are you IN...or are you OUT???

Oh yea, by the way? The primary 'requisite' to BE in the fashion scene in the 1st place, is that you have GOT to be a size, get this, ZERO! (translation: somewhat similar to the skeleton in your biology lab, but with skin..and (not necessarily)pretty features...and hair!) So, if you happen to be (shudder!) anything close to a size 1 or above, Get a Life, you are SO not stylish!

Who dictates the world of haute couture, you may wonder. It is not one, but a plethora of like-minded 'creators' of fashion who churn out fashion regulations by the hour every-single-day of the year. They get paid by the millions for it, their cranky whacky designs get noticed (God knows why), win accolades and all that earns them a place in the Golden Book of Mankind. More often than not, the huge (pun intended) chunk of people, not conforming to the pre-set standards of body architecture, get ignored.

[Below: Sketches by a top designer]

Hollywood in 2006 came out with a comical take on the World of fashion with "The Devil Wears Prada". The Devil, played sophisticatedly and with elan by a high-on-botox Meryl Streep, is a fashion guru, an icon feared by all in the industry for her ruthless ways. Editor of the most coveted fashion magazine 'Runaway', Miranda Priestly (Streep) runs her office mirthlessly, sorely testing her staff all the time. Her office shouts Prada!Armani!Versace! at every possible turn and Andrea Sachs (Anne Hathaway), her new assistant, finds her self plunged despairingly into a mire of impossibly thin, heart- wrenchingly stylish men and women in hot stilettos and tight leather pants revealing bodies that pledge life-long dedication to the gym! Andrea isn't the type. She's a typical cream-cheese bagel loving, jelly donut freak who, according to her, is a good writer and so, doesn't see why she must keep track of what she eats and what she wears!

[The movie is supposed to be inspired by Anna Wintour, editor of the U.S Vogue magazine]

I loved it, enjoyed every quip, every candid frame of the movie was hilarious but it left me wondering- if Andrea ( a size 8 ) wasn't acceptable, what about ME? I guess I'm entitled to eternal banishment from the very face of the earth for being a (humble) size 14+!!! I do have my moments of deep, dark sorrow when I look into the mirror and see my reflection, yet I do believe that that has nothing to do with who I am. I may not fit into any of this year's pret line from Milan or Paris or whereever, but I am happy wearing my cotton kurtas in fat-concealing colours like black with my inimitable dupatta wrapped around my broad shoulders and neck. THAT is my fashion statement and hence the anti-thesis, The Angel Wears HERSELF..... (not that I necessarily mean that the angel is me)

Style is intrinsic, it emanates from within. You maybe wearing the most elitest gown, but if you carry an attitude to match its price, you're not going to have too many fans! It is all a matter of confidence-how much thou love thyself! Style is comfort- if you like what you wear, it shows. Try it out, wearing your best jeans and your favourite t-shirt always makes you feel good, no matter if the jeans are Levi's or the T- Nike. But when you do dress up to,well, 'dress-up', wearing a short, slinky revealing dress, you may get a lot of winks but you couldn't care less because all you want to do right then is slip out of it.

What you see below is NOT a grizzly bear nor the sketch of a rag-picker, it is infact one of the top designs for the Fall of 2006. I'm sure none of you would want to be caught alive-or dead- in THAT!Now you know what I mean..?? :)

At the recent fashion week in Paris, renowned designer Jean Paul Gaultier did something that shocked the world. As a fitting response to the controversy over the size-O models, he put a voluptuous size 20+ model on the ramp in a daring black corset, proving that BIG is BEAUTIFUL. Now, isn't that admirable???

Rather than join the bandwagon on the season's best colour, pattern, length blah blah, take the time to discover YOUR style. That sets you apart and makes others sit up and notice your unique image- just YOU.

So, the next time you are intimidated by someone claiming to be in vogue (and indirectly alleging that you aren't) let them go to Hell, because The Devil (may) Wear Prada, (but) The Angel? Wears HERSELF...

P.S: Dolz, I know you're laughing at the title..Trust me, it still is funny for me too...but I didn't wanna go back on the few literary bursts that grace my tiny lil brain :)

Let me be frank with you. I'm not that interested in fashion.. When someone says that lime-green is the new black for this season, I just want to tell them to get a life, as I dont understand a damn thing about what they are trying to convey.."Style" is an expression of individualism mixed with charisma. Fashion is something that comes after style, and to me Fashion is what you adopt when you don't know who you are and its bad that we wish to live not according to reason, but according to fashion. Above all, I know that the most important thing you can take anywhere is not a Gucci bag or French-cut jeans; it's an open mind, and I am glad to be open.Fashion plays a critical part of the social life of man as sex, and is made up of the same ambivalent mixture of irresistible urges and inevitable taboos. End of the day, to me, its all about eventually becoming naked. Sorry to say this, but thats how the fashion is heading to.

I also liked the movie very much. It was really funny too.. "You maybe wearing the most elitest gown, but if you carry an attitude to match its price, you're not going to have too many fans!" wonderful words, I really second it. I really think its the heart that matters the most, irrespective of the way you are dressed.

I think I have mentioned this earlier to you. Some people look really ravishing when they re chubby, and some people look beautiful when they are slim, and you my dear friend, belong to the former. I would ask you not to worry about your size as you are really attractive the way you are and you have a heart of gold. This can be proved by the fact about the numerous number of friends who surround you always. In fact to even speak to you, I need to get an appointment [:D] Does this not show how popular you are?? It does not matter whether you re in a skirt and shirt or a jean and t shirt, or on a nike or some other brand, it is you, who is important and not the way you are attired. I am really proud that you are yourself and the only rule is not be boring and to dress cute wherever you go.. You re toooo intresting and way tooo cute!! Keep rockin di..Life is too short to blend in.

Cheers..

PS- sorry for so many drafts!

Preeti,

That's quite beautifully written and I must say felicitously too. Though I am as far away from fashions as I am from Management and Mathematics (areas I am known to despise because it does not take a rocket scientist to figure that I am horrendous at both... lol and have ethical demurs to one, which is besides the point) I think those lines concur with the philosophy I tend to stoically practise - without being too preachy, unless someone rubs me the wrong way and gets a laborious lecture on an antediluvian conception of clothes as one of the three essential needs of Mankind... oops... Humankind - when it comes to clothes. And it is indeed a blessing to see that there are similar-thinking denizens around who inhabit the planet.

But come to think of it this way... the flipside... very few 'live' their lives... others just fall in with the Lincolnian "bandwagon" and are merely "players" as the Bard said. That is the case... whether we are talking of clothes, attitudes, education, careers or anything else! (For a different kind of exposition on the aforementioned line of thought, you could skim through my post "Playing The Gentleman!" at prasans.blogspot.com).

(Before I go on... sorry... my comments are sometimes a "little" too elaborate ;) )

To me the question of being imitative, whether one is talking about these superimposed physical dimensions or about the faddish penchant for branded clothes or the mad rush for N 70s (Sathiya is going to kill me for this, never mind... lol) is in some sense a product of peer pressure. However, it is also a byproduct of something else - what my guru calls "when-your-heart-goes-to-sleep-let-your-mind-leap" syndrome. I have reason to believe that uniqueness, intellectual, emotional or physical, actually stems from being true to one's heart, which lodges one's likes and dislikes. But far too many times... we are scared to emancipate it and the mind conveniently takes over... after all by going with the wind, riding with the tide, seeing with the scope and dressing with the season, one is cock-a-hoop and smug in a society of which he is a part. I guess an act to balance the influence exerted by the palm-sized blood-pump and the hard brain is the need of the hour.

Hmmm... before I become too prolix let me quit.

Overall a nice post... one, which has the inklings of "making a difference" in a highly skeletal world... lol

Devil wears Prada was a good movie.. It screamed out everything u said in this post.. The bottom line is you dont care..

U cant live your life being an object or a sculpture that has to have certain dimensions.. We have to be dirty imperfect.. thats what makes us humans..

Preeti,

Yeah... I am pretty adamant on having mine own way with outlook to life and things (at times deliberately,.. but after years of being off the beaten track, I guess I can claim myself to be completely 'quixotic'... in the British sense...lol).

Looking fwd to your next post. Let's see what it has got to say!

u stole ma words all the way.. geee.. yehh babeeeeeeeee.. i religiously confirm wyd every bead of thought rolled out here..

I believe every woman is born with a charm that's as unique as the palmline runnin across the face of her palm. As far as the size goes, I'd only ike to say 'the bigger the better'.

The muvee 'the devil wears prada'is kickarse- thanks 2 ruby, we gotta watch it.. Ur rejoinder is extremely apt.. kudos 2 tat...

and abt the eating, wat I'd say is tat we live to eat, drink and make babies.. starvation and abstinence only lead to anorexic, depressing, depressed drags with a low egg count.. no eggs---> no chicken---> no controversy---> no life.. soooo eat well n live life bindaas..

n abt fashion, who gives a damn!iTS ALL ABT COMFORT, feeling good n dressing ur best in ur best known way...

good post.. sleazy comment.. but babeeeeee.. Tatz ma ishtyle at 12 am.. geee mwahhhhhhhhhhh

Well, "fashion sense" is important i feel...in the sense you should know what to wear to different places...but, thats it......

my basic idea is to dress smartly, whatever it be....u tend to command respect that way...and the chicks too! :D

But...dressing smartly does not mean...levi's, nike, pepe etc etc....it means...groom urself, right clothes and right shape and size!

I can find about 30 different shirts which can match the design of a branded t-shirt and also lessen ur expenditure by atleast 500 bucks!...the point is..all kind of clothes give u the feel...but its for u to decide what u feel comfortable in.....nothing against anything!

in short, be what u r...and never to follow the fashion sense of someone else...start a trend of ur own...OK...i am getting carried away with this! ;)

outta here!

size zero is over hyped. It actually ISN'T ALL THAT SMALL, esp for asians who already have small bone structure.

hey. that's a very good oppinion and i agree with it quite a bit. though it doesn't particularly matter once you pass up high school what brands you wear and what you weigh, there are lots of health risks these days on both extremes of the weight pole. on one hand a person could be a size -2 and not be able to give birth to a child because of lack of nutrition. the other, equally ugly side of the wieght scale (haha. i didn't do that on purpose but when i thought about it, it made me laugh..) a person who eats unhealthy and isn't naturally built to be a size 10,15, or 20 is at serious health risks having to do with the heart. i think it's important to look out for the newest diet out there. in america, we always want bigger. bigger isn't always better. i have a friend who is a beautiful girl. she is curvacious and gorgeous. the best part is, she eats like a rabbit. she portions, eats organic, eats fresh. the way she is built to look is just the way she is. that's perfect. i, however, am a size 4 and still dropping weight because i used to eat terribly. now i eat the way my size 10 friend does. my grandmother saw i was dropping pounds by eating, in her words, "too many fruits and veggies" (yeah, it sounded stupid to me too) but that's just the way i'm intended to be. i have energy, i work out, i eat meat and sugar sometimes. (today i had sour patch kids! yummm)

on the fashion issue (and i'm sorry i'm talking so much, i've had feelings about this for a while):
the street are disgustingly infultrated with snobs who buy what they buy based on the label. the reason i buy name brands: the artists who develop these clothes have gone to school, studied fashion, and made it their life for longer than i've been alive, i could venture. i dont buy a dress just because it's Dolce & Gabanna. I buy it because i like it's style, it'll match the coat i bought from Ross and my 2 year old shoes that are still rockin it would make it fall fabulously with my body. it's important to me to have those clothes that make me feel like a million dollars. first of all, i made the money myself! it's pretty cool to have a name brand that you thought only celebrities could own! call it ego, but i dont brag about it. i just feel good, feminine, and beautiful when i dress to impress. at home, though, i'll take off the little dress and throw on some sweats and a nice T-shirt! hooray cumfy clothes!!
